Thirsty Thursday: Gifts for Boozehounds

Today we start talking about what the heck to give boozehounds for the holidays.  That’s right – the creative way to reinforce uncle Joe’s bad habit. You’re welcome.

You know what is better than getting socks for the holidays?  Whiskey!  You know whats better than getting whiskey for the holidays?  Getting it on December 4th!  That is what happened to me.  My loving and brilliant wife decided to get me a subscription to the Dram Club through the Masters of Malt this year and I could not be more excited.  I kind of feel like a kid on Christmas, if Christmas came early and instead of a Hot Wheels set I got a year long subscription to taste 20 different and unique whiskeys.

The Masters of Malt site is a great place to learn about and purchase whiskey online.  In addition to having a great selection of bottles and tasters they also allow you to create or blend your own whiskey variety.  While I think it would be a blast to blend my own whiskey to my taste I think I need to try a few more varieties to really pin down the flavors I enjoy.  That is why the Dram Club is so great.  Over the course of a year they are going to send me 5 – 3cl “drams” of whiskey to taste every quarter.  The whiskeys they send are no joke, so far as I can tell.  In my first shipment I received a Japanese whiskey (love), a Highland Park 25-year, and a 30-year Speyside in addition to two other drams.  Along with my first shipment of tasters, I received two “Masters of Malt” whiskey glasses so I can properly enjoy my whiskey neat (not that I really needed more glassware but I’m not complaining).

At this point I have only tried one of the whiskeys but I will be taking notes on all of them and will give you a recap as I get through each of my quarterly shipments.  All in all I have to say I am very impressed and excited about being a part of the Dram Club and I would absolutely recommend it as a gift for the whiskey lover in your life this holiday season.
