So… You wanna make a wedding cake?

Big. News.  I actually have been hoarding secrets from you and I am sorr about that. So sorr.

But it was worth it. Ready?

I am officially making someone’s wedding cake.  As in, someone is trusting me explicitly with the beauty and taste of their wedding cake. And YEAS I am excited.

It’s about a month after my wedding, which got me thinking, should I be making my own? Now, I know people who are for and against this, but let me tell you how this weekend of wedding cake choosing went.

We went to one cake place who was going to charge me $1000 by the time it was all said and done for a cake I KNOW I could make on my own.  Then, in the car on the way to the other cake baker, I was telling my mom how I could totally do this, giving her a time table and pretty much syking myself up to make my own effin’ cake.

BUT, God Bless Alice at Alice’s Piece of Cake. God Bless her, and her superior vision and ability, and reasonable price. I walked in with a vision that looked a little something like this:

And we decided upon this cake for our wedding day!

(all above wedding cakes were shown on the knot)

So, while I won’t be making my own cake (Whew!) I am thrilled to be able to share in someone else’s day and make theirs.  She want’s a funfetti cake, and to that I say, “HURRAH!”

It’s fun, fresh, and completely appropriate for this girl.  She has perfected the art of the funfetti box.  This time, we will jazz it up a bit and come up with a from scratch funfetti to rival Duncan.  I have not settled on this yellow cake recipe as the base for the cake, so I’m not sharing it here today, but please enjoy some photos of the process of making my first practice tiered cake.

A) I ran out of buttercream.

B) I decorated this cake in less than one hour.

Can you imagine what it will look like with some more practice? Swoon.

Baked cakes, and applying the moistening syrup.

Making the buttercream

The crumb coat, by far the most important step.

Inserting dowels for stability.

Swoon worthy.

You give me a few months, and I guarantee this will no longer be just helping a friend out, but a side business. YEAS!

Love,

Whit

  3. If I didn’t already know someone that makes cakes as a side business, so they are giving us an absolute STEAL of a deal, I’d totally make my own cake! This definitely looks pro already! I can’t wait to see how the final one turns out!
