Whooo boy, have I got a treat for you.
You and I both know that as much as I love me some red wine, Dad loves himself some brown drank more than anyone I know.
Yes. I did. say drank.
you’re welcome.
See, we were on the good ole’ H-moon at Bouchon, Thomas Keller’s French resto (eff yes, you should go there.) and old gramps decided he had had enough wine for the day. Grandpa wanted a brown drank.
A manhattan, to be precise. It’s Brian’s old man drink of choice.
But to be safe he looks over their drink menu, scanning for other grandpa dranks.
He stumbled across the ‘Black Walnut Manhattan’ and at first was concerned he wouldn’t like it the way he loves a good ole manhattan. If it ain’t broke, right?
But I encouraged him to step outside of his old man panties and try this big boy drink.
And when it hit his lips, I became the second most admired thing at that table.
I actually think he would have discarded me and honeymooned with this drink if it were possible, boo to physics.
Brian declared it to be “The best drank he has ever had in his life.” and that he could “Drink 4 more.” yea…. I’ll believe that when I see it…
But I gotta tell you, even for a red wino like myself, this is a darn good brown drank.
We asked to bartender for the recipe and by Martha, wouldn’t you know, he gave it to us! I then ordered the bottles needed to be shipped to our house so that we could make these for old bushel britches when he got home from work.
Black Walnut Manhattans (aka, fancy brown drank.)
- 2 ounces Michter’s Rye
- 1/2 ounce Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth
- 1/2 Nocino Della Cristina
- Splash of Brandied Cherry Juice
- Flamed Orange Zest
Take all the wet ingredients and shake over ice. Pour into a classy man glass. Cut one piece of orange peel, and light on fire to extract it’s juice.
Toss it in the drink and serve.
Men of America, you are welcome.
Love,
Whit
